Navigating Change:
Toward Equitable, Democratic Organizations
Navigating Change Content Fellows is a series of projects that highlight the research and experiences of Ford Civic Engagement and Government grantees. As a group, these projects are the culmination of a year-long capacity initiative supported by the Ford Foundation, Aurora Commons and Change Elemental.
Our initial goal for Navigating Change was to spark peer interactions and learning that support organizational transformation, particularly in terms of bridging generations, expanding leadership, and reimagining how we work together in the future. In these projects, we see how individuals in organizations are imagining and creating change across the field.
This change takes form in experiences of identity, and how they affect our concepts of power and approaches to leadership. Several projects focus on the values that we hold, both individually and organizationally, and how we harmonize the two to strengthen relationships and create trust. We consider how transition affects organizations, but also what it feels like for an individual who undergoes the journey of leadership development, from young changemaker to organizational director. We will be releasing projects once a week, into March 2024.
It has been a pleasure to work with these incredible leaders in our field and we are inspired by their ideas about our future. We are excited to share them with you.
Our Life’s Quilt
October 25, 2021
By Akosua Meyers
Like a quilt, the story of life weaves on
Each patch holds a distinct memory
Some precious, some cruel, some solemn, some uncontrollably humorous
Oh, the stories they tell of the past, present, and to be sewn.
Today, we celebrate, tomorrow we weep
Each patch holds a distinct memory
All we hope for when we navigate the uncertainty
The days of gloom and the nights of glee.
These stories matter to who we were, are and will be
Each patch holds a distinct memory
Handle with care the moments we encounter
Stitch tightly these events that are part of our story.
As we reflect on all we have gained and lost
Each patch holds a distinct memory
Like battle scars always visible regardless of how long
Honor the tales, struggles, and victories every time.
When we are no longer here, the quilt reveals our truth
Each patch holding a distinct memory
Of how we failed, conquered, inhaled, and exhaled
A quilt of life woven in tears, joy, pain, and eternal glory.
